Aims and Vision for Curriculum 

At St Augustine Academy, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum aims to foster a deep understanding of faith, spirituality, and moral values, while promoting respect and tolerance for diverse beliefs and cultures. Grounded in the teachings of the Church of England and our vision ‘Together with God, every member of our school family is supported and shown compassion on their own learning journey to live life in all its fullness,” our RE Program aspires to: 

Promote Moral and Ethical Awareness: Develop ability to reflect on ethical issues and moral dilemmas, informed by Christian teachings and other world religions. 

Foster Respect and Tolerance: Cultivate and understanding and appreciation of the diversity of religious beliefs and practices in a multicultural society. 

Encourage Critical Thinking: Develop analytical skills and critical thinking by exploring philosophical and theological questions. 

Prepare for informed Citizenship: Equip students with the knowledge and empathy to engage thoughtfully and responsibly in an interconnected and pluralistic world. 

Developing Our Learners

Our RE curriculum is designed to develop well-rounded individuals who are informed, empathetic, and reflective. We aim to: 

 

Enhance Knowledge and Understanding: Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Christianity and other major world religions, their beliefs, practices, and historical contexts. 

 

Develop Personal Reflection: encourage students to reflect on their own beliefs and values, fostering personal growth and spiritual development. 

 

Build Analytical Skills: teach students to critically analyze religious texts, ethical issues, and philosophical arguments. 

 

Promote Empathy and Compassion: Encourage and empathetic understanding of different perspectives and the importance of compassion in daily life. 

 

Encourage Active Engagement: Foster active participation in discussions, debates, and community activities, enhancing students’ communication and interpersonal skills. 

Structure And Sequence

The RE curriculum at St Augustine Academy follows a structured and sequential approach, ensuring a cohesive learning experience. All students will take the AQA GCSE Short Course in Religious Studies, which is organised as follows: 

 

Key stage 3 (years 7-9) 

Year 7: Introduction to Christianity, Sikhism, Islam, World Religions and Secular Overview, Festivals, and celebrations. 

Year 8: Digging deeper into Christianity and Islam, Buddhism, and faith as a teen in the UK. 

Year 9: Biblical Literacy, Philosophy and ethics, Human Rights and Social Justice, Religion and Science, Arts, and the Media. 

 

Key Stage 4 (years 10-11) 

Year 10: AQA GCSE Short Course Units – Study of Christianity and Buddhism 

Year 11: AQA GCSE Short Course Units – Thematic Studies (Peace and Conflict, Crime and Punishment, Relationships, Family, and Religion). 

 

Assessment will be continuous, with a combination of formative assessments, project work, and end-of-unit tests to prepare students for the final AQA Short Course examination. 

Destinations And the World of Work

Religious education at St Augustine Academy equips students with valuable skills and knowledge for a range of future destinations and career paths: 

 

Further Education: The analytical, reflective, and ethical skills developed through RE provide a solid foundation for further studies in humanities, social sciences, and theology. 

 

Career Opportunities: the skills gained from studying RE are applicable to various professions, including education, social work, counselling, law, journalism, and public services. 

 

Personal Development: Beyond academic and career pathways, RE fosters personal growth, empathy, and ethical awareness, preparing students to be compassionate and informed citizens in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. 

 

By the end of their RE studies at St Augustine Academy, students will be well-prepared to navigate the complexities of modern society with a well-rounded understanding of religious and ethical perspectives.
