Visit to a Musical

We visit SiX - the musical

Ms Michell took a group of students to a West End musical recently....

"... and all because a couple of girls in my History class asked me if I'd seen SiX the Musical when we were studying the Tudors.

They were singing the songs in order to recall which Queen came when and to remember their names. I was so impressed with how this show had inspired a bunch of year 8 girls into thinking the Tudor monarchy was cool, that I just had to find out more! … What's more the ratio of boys wanting a ticket was impressive.

SiX, for those who aren’t sure is a musical about the reclamation of women’s history.  Retelling the story of those we have dismissed, or judged as villains.  But not in a woke way, in a fun and brilliant way! Six goes back 500 years, as the wives of Henry VIII take the floor. Their marriages were bloody, messy, church-reforming, and pored over by gossipy historians – but this time they tell their stories, their way.

Our students loved it, grinning from ear to ear.  The treat, the grandeur, the splendour, the camaraderie, of a coach trip to London, was just beautiful to see.  Many had not ever been to the Theatre before and many had not seen London’s West End.

We organised for the students to have an afternoon tea on the coach so they wouldn’t get hungry in the performance.  Driving into London we gave them a tour of the sites of the West End, using the coach drivers microphone to provide a running commentary.  Seeing the Christmas decorations up was a lovely surprise.

The show got everyone singing and seat dancing and the impeccable behaviour from all the students was delightful.  The theatre even mentioned how perfectly behaved St Augustine’s students were.We finished the trip with a karaoke contest on the coach, teachers and students alike, singing (and screaming) SiX hits, Christmas classics and chart toppers.  Everyone rolled off the coach back in the school car park with a head full of happiness, huge smiles and awesome memories made.

Today we are all tired but we are also all satisfied….. and the only question doing the rounds is…. So Who is YOUR favourite QUEEN?!"

We had quite a lot of comments from parents/carers on the success of the event:

  • Thank you to you and all staff involved in making this enjoyable for all.
  • This was actually Isabella’s first school trip since covid hit and cancelled her year six excursion.
  • She hadn't been to London before or seen a show; the show was amazing but so was the coach journey with one of the teachers acting as tour guide and pointing out all the sites which made it all the more special.
  • Everything went absolutely amazing u couldn't of done anything better we was kept up to date with everything
  • Just want to say Island said the show was AMAZING!
  • Great communication, throughout from start to finish
  • Thank you to you and the staff - Benji loved it and had an amazing time. The whole process seemed to go very smoothly and all aspects including travel and food were covered well.
  • Hope you had a great evening. Ceyda loved every minute of it, from the show itself which she had wanted to see for a while to the coach driver pointing out landmarks and allowing them to listen to music on the journey.
  • A well planned and thought out trip all round! Thank you for allowing Ceyda the opportunity to join the trip.
  • Couldn't fault it at all. Well organised, well communicated and Ava had the most brilliant time. Sounds like the coach home was a treat
