Day trip to France

Posted on: 27th Jan 2023

A group of 50 students and 6 teachers took an adventure to France at the end of January. It was an early start (5:15am) but everyone left with high spirits. For most students it was their first time abroad and everyone was buzzing with excitement.

Our first stop was a classic bakery, where the students were led by Bruno who showed them how bread was made. Students were tasked with translating key words and phrases from French to English. Then they got their turn at rolling dough, ready for the customers. We soon parted with our pain au chocolat and headed to our next destination.

Stop number two was at a chocolatier, who explained how they source their cocoa beans from the suppliers who actively plant new trees to reduce the effects of deforestation. Students were shown how different types of chocolate are made and taught the chocolate song. After some free samples students were ready for their activity booklet about changes of state. We hopped back on the coach and headed to the next challenge.

Our third stop brought us to a stunning castle in Boulogne. Here the students completed a trail hunt, translating the questions from French to English and exploring the grounds. Students worked together to decipher clues and answer questions based on the history of Boulogne. We even had the opportunity to enter the cathedral which has a stunning décor and organ playing during our time inside

Our final stop was to a large supermarket where students found the French word for ingredients in their booklets. Students also had the opportunity to buy snacks/keepsakes during this stop. Most of the group were confident when paying for their items, remembering to use their ‘s’il vous plait’ and ‘merci’.

Finally we headed back to St Augustines with tired but content learners who, despite the early start, stayed enthusiastic and polite throughout the day.
