BackFootball update from Mr Jones
Posted on: 25th Mar 2023Year 7/8 Girls Football
I have just got back from Maplesden Noakes where the year 7 & 8 girls were playing football in the district cup against Maplesden, St Simon Stock & MGGS. After the year 7&8 girls excellent 3-0 win last week in the National Cup I was excited for today's game with the opportunity for them to qualify for another final. When they turned up to get changed today I found out we only had 5 available players.
The 5 girls decided that we was going to walk down to Maplesden anyway and see what we could do. The tournament was 7-aside and when we arrived the teacher in charge said we can play 5v5 and our games won't count towards the competition or play with 2 less players 7 v 5 and still have the chance of qualifying for a final. I let the girls choose and they decided to give it a go 7v5 (great attitude!).
The five girls were Chloe Harvey (yr7), Tulisa Cooke (Yr7), Grace Shrubb (yr8), Shemi Daramola (Yr8) and Tanesha Mitchell (Yr8). The games were 20 minutes long and in the first game, we narrowly lost 1-0 against Maplesden. They rolled their socks up and went again in the next one against St Simon Stock and we managed to battle again with 2 less players to get a draw as Tanesha Mitchell scored a fantastic goal. That gave the girls a chance of qualifying if they could beat MGGS in the last game. The girls fought to the end but let in 2 late goals and lost 2-0. To lose to an all girls grammar only 2-0 with 2 less players was still a great achievement.
All of the girls attitude was first class, they didn't complain once and worked so hard! I'd like to highlight Grace Shrubb as she performed incredibly well and her attitude with praising and encouraging the year 7s was fantastic to see.
All 5 girls were a credit to the school. I'm so proud of the effort and performance.
Year 7 Boys Football
On Wednesday afternoon we experienced an epic cup Semi-Final against local rivals Cornwallis Academy. In a very disciplined performance that ebbed back and forth, the game eventually ended 1-1, with SAA fighting back from 1-0 down at HT, through a superb goal from Finley Sale. The game then went to penalties, with SAA having an opportunity to win the shootout, however heartbreak occurred with a missed spot kick and Cornwallis going onto win the shootout 8-7. In scenes all too familiar with England fans, there were tears from our little Yr.7 warriors! A superb cup run, halted at the last from 12 yards!!
