BackAcademy girls' team are Kent Cup semi-finalists!
Posted on: 30th Nov 2023Mr Jones reports:
In the last round the girls played in torrential rain today it was arctic conditions as the girls took on the school from Broadstairs Charles Dickens School in a nail biting quarter final.
It was the home side that started the strongest, the long journey perhaps hindering the away side early on, some excellent passing football creating several opportunities. A long range effort from Ruby Sykes stung the hands of the Charles Dickens goalkeeper but she could only tip the ball into the back of the net. Another great long range goal from Ruby, 1-0 to SAA. St Augustine continued to press with the midfield of Shemi, Lacey, Ruby and Tally playing some fluent passing football. Several superb crosses from Shemi narrowly missing our strikers as we searched for a second goal. It was the away side that would grow into the game and began to create chances in the latter stages of the half, Lucy carefully claimed several shots from the edge of the box as SAA held on to see out the half with the 1-0 lead.
The second half started a replica of the first but it was Charles Dickens School that struck early on, a low shot from the edge of the box skidding of the surface and into the bottom corner for 1-1. The game really opened up and it became end to end as both sides searched for the winner but didn’t really test either of the two goalkeepers. Until, with 10 minutes to go Lacey put a through ball to Sophie who nipped in before the keeper, it then became a foot race with Sophie and the defender to see who would get to the ball first before it crossed the line. A mixture of Sophie and the defender managed to bundle the ball into the net to give SAA the lead. Similar to the last round, do we push for another one or defend what we have? Charles Dickens pressed us and continued to try and get the equaliser and in the last minute it felt like déjà vu. Olivia slipped and their striker went through 1v1 with just Lucy to beat but Lucy managed to save the ball with her feet. SAA narrowly held onto their lead to take their place in the semi-final of the Kent Cup. A phenomenal achievement from the girls. We await the winners of Invicta GS v Homewood.
Player of the Match – Olivia, an absolute rock in defence today, she chased everything and made several key tackles that denied Charles Dickens goal scoring opportunities as well starting some attacks for us herself. A tremendous performance.
