RoadSense Workshops for Years 7 & 9

Posted on: 21st Jan 2025

On January 21st, students from Years 7 and 9 participated in a series of insightful RoadSense workshops, led by Kent County Council. These interactive sessions were designed to educate young people about the potential dangers they may face on the road and how they can make safer choices.

Throughout the workshops, students explored several key themes. One crucial area of discussion was the impact of mobile phones while on the move. With the rise of mobile phone use, especially among young people, students learned about the risks of distractions—such as texting, talking, or checking social media—while walking, cycling, or even crossing the road. The message was clear: staying alert is essential to avoid accidents.

Another significant topic was the importance of playing safely, particularly around roads. Students were reminded of the dangers of playing too close to traffic and how simple actions, like running into the street unexpectedly, can have severe consequences. The session also highlighted some alarming statistics about road accidents involving young people, which served as a stark reminder of why road safety is so important.

The workshops also fostered a deeper discussion around active transport methods, such as walking and cycling. Students considered the benefits of these modes of transport for both their health and the environment. They also learned how to stay safe while cycling, including the importance of wearing helmets and being visible to drivers.

We hope that the lessons learned from the RoadSense workshops will stay with our students for years to come, ensuring that they make safe and informed decisions when out and about in our local area and beyond.
